We have received word that long time Head Drake/State Discus Official, Chuck Helms was found unconscious and unresponsive January 28th.  Discovered was some form of medical event had caused him to lose consciousness and fall.  He hit his head on the ground and the impact caused 2 brain bleeds, one in the front of his head and one along the left side.  He is in a coma and has sedation medication that, if he could wake on his own, he would.  It is designed more to keep him more comfortable than asleep.  He is still considered critical.   Chuck had recently decided to retire from the Drake Relays.  Please keep Chuck in your thoughts and payer.

Dakotah Goodel, 3A and Drake Relays discus champion, l will take her throwing talents west down I-80 and become an Iowa Hawkeye next fall.
Ben Oostedorf, Madrid, will run Cross Country at Iowa Central next fall.
Erica Grubbs, 8th in 3A Cross Country this past fall, for Davenport Assumption, will take her talents to Chicgao next fall and run for Northwestern of the Big 10 conference.
Matt Harmeyer, North Polk, was a state runner-up in the 800 in 2010.  He is now in his second season as a combined event athlete at Iowa State. 

As you know, many of Iowa's former prep stars are competing at the college/university level.  It is my goal to get info on ALL of them before the year is over.

The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, started awarding their version of a "Most Valuable Player" award, the Bowerman, 3 years ago.  I am honored to be on the selection committee for this prestigious award.  It is awarded in the summer, after the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  I am putting this information in the Next Level for a number of reasons, but perhaps most importantly, is that these athletes will be competing on the Blue Oval in June at the NCAA Championships.  This story is bout the WOMEN.  I will post a story about the men next week.

A number of Iowa preps made their college choice (Wed. February 1), was the first day of the early signing period.  Following is list of those student athletes and their choices:
James Harrington, Cedar Falls.  4A champion in 100, 200, 4x1 and 4x2.  Drake Relays champion in 100, 4x1 and 4x2 has signed with the University of Alabama.
Hannah Savage, Cedar Falls.  Drake Relays and 4A medalist.  Northern Illinois University
Taylor Twedt, West Fork.  2A High Jump champion.  Drake Relays High Jump runner-up.  University of Wisconsin.

Sioux City North has a number of recent graduates who have taken their talents to "The Next Level" and are doing quite well.  Derik Simenson, Sioux City North class of 2008 (Morningside College) competed at the NAIA National Cross Country Meet this past fall.  Jesus Iniguez, Sioux City North class of 2010 and Abbabiya Simbassa, Sioux City North class of 2011competed at the NJCAA Half-Marathon National Meet, for Iowa Central Community College and the Tritons were crowned National Champions.   Josee Jansen, Sioux City North class of 2011 (University of South Dakota), competing for USD in Cross Country and Track.

Arizona Stat traveled to College Station, Texas to take part in the Texas A& M Mondo Challenge this past weekend.

A number of former Iowa preps competing for LSU, Arkansas, and Iowa competed in the Razorback Invitational at Arkansas over the weekend and turned in some fine performances.  The Arkansas meet was also the collegiate debut of LSU Lady Tiger freshman Alex Gochenour, of Logan Magnolia, in the pentathlon. The former U.S. Junior heptathlon champion and Iowa high school state and Drake Relays champion made her first ever appearance in the indoor pentathlon Friday as she scored a total of 3,679 points to secure a sixth-place finish in the competition.  While making her indoor debut in the multis, Gochenour established indoor PRs of 8.84 in the 60 hurdles (944 points), 5-2 ¼ in the high jump (712 points), 36-1 ¼ in the shot put (595 points), 18-1 ½ in the long jump (706 points) and 2 minutes, 27.73 seconds in the 800-meter run (722 points) en route to her opening sixth-place finish.
